Mesothelioma Treatment

A person’s risk of developing mesothelioma depends on how much asbestos exposure occurred.  Prognosis can definitely be affected by how early the cancer is diagnosed and how aggressively it is treated.  Since the symptoms are not unique, diagnosing mesothelioma can be difficult for doctors who are not experienced with the condition.  Doctors who specialize in asbestos exposure are in the fields of oncology, respiratory, and thoracic surgery.  The cancer is most commonly diagnosed through a CT scan, MRI, PET scan, and X-ray.

Once diagnosed, a number of treatments are available, the most common being surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.  A number of new treatments have also emerged in recent years, including intraoperative photodynamic therapy, immunotherapy, and gene therapy.  Depending on the patient’s age, overall health, and the stage of the cancer, a doctor may recommend a combination of these treatments.
